CAIR Repeats Call for Release of Gaza Doctor After Reports of Severe Torture

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today repeated its call for the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian doctor from Gaza who has been in Israeli detention since December 2024, after UN experts reported that he has been subjected to severe torture in Israeli captivity.

UN special rapporteurs Tlaleng Mofokeng and Ben Saul, warned they had received reports that Dr. Abu Safiya, once the head of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was facing “cruel and degrading treatment” in Israeli custody and that his health condition remained “dire.”

Dr. Abu Safiya has been held by Israeli forces without charge for more than a year.

In a statement, Washington, D.C., based CAIR said:

“Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya did nothing except treat the countless civilian casualties of Israel’s genocidal terror campaign in Gaza. His kidnapping, imprisonment and torture by the Israeli government is a crime against humanity that demands justice. We call on members of Congress to demand his immediate release and we urge international authorities to hold the Israeli government to account for their crimes.”

CAIR has previously called for Dr. Abu Safiya’s release.
