CAIR Expresses Solidarity with Catholic Community After President Trump Attacks Pope Leo

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed solidarity with the Catholic community following President Trump’s rhetorical attacks on Pope Leo XIV.

In a social media post, Trump criticized Pope Leo, stating in part: “I don’t want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States…Leo should get his act together as Pope, use Common Sense, stop catering to the Radical Left, and focus on being a Great Pope, not a Politician.”

His comments came after the pope criticized the “delusion of omnipotence” fueling the U.S.-Israel war on Iran.

In a statement, CAIR said:

“We stand in solidarity with the Catholic community in the wake of President Trump’s attack on Pope Leo. Between denigrating the pope, portraying himself as Jesus (peace be upon him), and sarcastically praising Allah, the president’s mockery of religion is both deranged and insulting. Although no one should be surprised by this sort of rhetoric, the American people should continue to expect and demand better from the president of the United States.”

CAIR recently condemned the president’s “unhinged, racist and genocidal” rhetoric and reiterated its call for Congress to reconvene and vote to end the war on Iran after the president posted a message online saying a “whole civilization will die tonight.”

Washington, D.C., based CAIR also condemned Trump’s reference to the Iranians as “animals” in response to a reporter’s question, his inflammatory remarks mocking the faith of Islam and his announcement of planned war crimes targeting Iranian civilian infrastructure.

CAIR said President Trump’s Threat to bomb Iran “Back to the stone ages” was “anti-Muslim, racist, and dehumanizing.”
