CAIR-MI Calls on Road Commission to Reject Biased Request to Review ‘Voices of Palestine’ Adopt-A-Road Signs

The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Oakland County Road Commission to reject a biased request by Oakland County Executive David Coulter to review “Voices of Palestine” Adopt-A-Road signs, which he falsely linked violent extremism.

Coulter recently called up the Road Commission to remove “Voices of Palestine” Adopt-A-Road signs in the county, linking them to the attack in March against Temple Israel synagogue. Coulter stated that the signs are “in the heart of Oakland County’s Jewish community, near the site of a recent synagogue attack, is deeply troubling…” and “that the location appears to disregard the impact it would have and risks being perceived as an act of provocation.”

The Adopt-A-Road program in the county allows residents to sponsor a minimum two-mile stretch of road in which community members agree to remove litter in such zones no less than twice per year.

“We call on the Road Commission to reject Oakland County Executive David Coulter’s biased attempt to silence voices in support of Palestinian humanity,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. “Palestinians have been subjected to ethnic cleansing and genocide – with the complicity of our nation and the international community – because they have been dehumanized and denied their human rights for decades.”

Walid noted that there are many members of the Jewish community in Michigan and nationwide who advocate for Palestinian rights.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims. La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar
