In response to the crisis, in December 2002 Hussein founded in Houston the first Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a civil rights organization that advocates for Muslims and works with the government and law enforcement to stem radicalization by focusing on Muslim integration. “I believed that was not good for America,” Hussein, who went on to lead CAIR’s first statewide organization in Texas, said of the early aughts, which increased feelings of isolation among many American Muslims. “Fundamentalism, terrorism, extremism comes out of frustration and hopelessness. We give hope to people to be in the mainstream. We make them believe in the American system.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organisation in the United States, released a statement on Monday condemning the Israeli government’s seizure of the mosque.
“The apartheid Israeli government’s seizure of authority over the Ibrahimi Mosque is yet another attempt to consolidate its illegal occupation of Palestinian land, undermine Palestinian self-governance, and alter the historic status of one of Islam’s holiest sites,” CAIR said in the statement.
