(HARTFORD, CT, 2/6/15) — The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT) today welcomed the recognition of Muslim school holidays by the Waterbury Board of Education.
Thursday night, the Waterbury Board of Education voted unanimously to officially recognize two Muslim holidays, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
A note to the listings states:
“The measure calls on the superintendent to write a letter at the beginning of each school year reminding school staff to be mindful of the holidays – Eid Al-Adha and Eid Al-Fitr – when scheduling big events.”
“We welcome the decision to recognize the Islamic holidays. We believe that it will serve to enhance the learning environment for Muslim students and for students of all backgrounds in Waterbury schools,” said CAIR-CT Board Member Imam Kashif Abdul-Karim.
“As a leader in my community and a father, I thank the entire school board and the leadership in our public schools for this wise decision. Our Muslim students will not have to choose between celebrating Eid and school. Also, parents won’t have to worry about their children missing important exams and special activities during Muslim holidays,” said Fahd Sayed, a board member of the United Muslim Mosque in Waterbury.
Last year New London Board of Education set the precedent of officially recognizing Muslim holidays in Connecticut.
CAIR offers a booklet, called “An Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” designed to help school officials provide a positive learning environment for Muslim students.
