hispanic-heritage-month(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/23/14) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today issued a statement marking National Hispanic Heritage Month.

In its statement welcoming the month, CAIR said:

“Our nation is blessed by its diversity, and a vital component of that diversity is reflected in the celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. We celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The American Muslim community is blessed and nurtured by a broad base of ethnicities, including Americans of Hispanic descent. They have made and continue to make extraordinary contributions to our communities, our American way of life, and to our country.

“God states in the Quran, Islam’s revealed text: ‘O humankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another.’ (49:13)

“Generations of Hispanic Americans, now more than 54 million strong, have rooted in our communities and are part of our American fabric. Many Latinos still face challenges that require them to stand up for their civil rights and liberties. The Council on American-Islamic Relations celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month and hopes that this important American community continues to strengthen the lives and spirit of all Americans so that they continue to advance our nation.”

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
