maryland-myls-2015(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/10/15) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said its first Muslim Youth Leadership Symposium (MYLS) in Annapolis, Md., was a success.

The symposium, held in partnership with United Muslim Relief, was the first such Muslim youth leadership event organized in the state. Themed “Learning the Legislative Process,” the event was open to youth ranging in age from 14 to 19 and featured presentations by state legislators, Maryland mosque leaders, policy advocates, and activists.

Highlights included a tour of state buildings during which participants were provided the opportunity to witness a live Senate hearing in the House Chamber. Hearing proceedings were paused momentarily as the youth group was publicly acknowledged and received a standing ovation.

Youth were also given the opportunity to interact directly with state legislators who dropped in to welcome the group and answer questions.

The governor’s office presented CAIR Maryland outreach nanager and event organizer Zainab Chaudry with a governor’s citation congratulating the “successful effort to introduce the political process, encourage youth participation and gain increased understanding of how elected officials represent the public.”

“The goal of this symposium was to provide an opportunity for the next generation of American Muslim leaders to connect with state legislators, build leadership skills and learn about the Maryland General Assembly and the legislative process, said Chaudry.

She added: “We have received tremendous positive feedback from parents, youth and community leaders. It’s heartening to see the excitement generated by this event. We thank United Muslim Relief, our many organizational co-sponsors and everyone who helped make this event possible.”

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
