CAIR-NJ: Palestinian student group reinstated at Rowan – Star-Ledger (Newark, NJ)

The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, known as CAIR-NJ, celebrated the reinstatement of the Rowan Group. But CAIR-NJ officials said the student group faced “targeted harassment” from Make NJ Red, which “represents a clear and troubling attempt to suppress pro-Palestinian voices.”

“The reinstatement of the SJP chapter is a victory for free speech, the First Amendment, and the broader commitment to academic freedom,” said Selaedin Maksut, the executive director of CAIR-NJ.

CAIR-MI: UM president set to speak at national antisemitism summit, prompting criticism – Detroit News

Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, added “antisemitism is a real phenomenon in the United States and Michigan.”

“However, President Ono has been willfully negligent in addressing Islamophobia on his campus,” Walid said.

It is not problematic as an isolated appearance for Ono to speak at the ADL conference, Walid said. But it is problematic in the context of how UM has handled the tensions on campus following the Oct. 7, 2023, surprise attack on Israel by Hamas, Walid said. Tensions between Jewish and pro-Palestinian students erupted on the campus of UM and campuses following an Israeli counterattack on Gaza that left tens of thousands of people dead and an estimated $18.5 billion in infrastructure damage before a ceasefire was reached in January.

CAIR-MI filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights against Ono and filed a lawsuit for allegedly prioritizing antisemitism over Islamophobia on campus amid tensions between Arab and Jewish students over the war.

“President Ono has a horrendous record of showing bias toward Muslims and pro-Palestinian students,” Walid said
