Earlier this week, the Houston chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the NFL should not fine a player for rejecting genocide.

“Azeez Al-Shaair’s message was rooted in basic human decency and concern for innocent lives. That should not be controversial, much less subject to a fine,” CAIR-Houston director of operations Imran Ghani said in a statement.

CAIR-MN: Trump brings his attacks on Somali migrants to the world stage at Davos – Washington Post

Many Somali refugees fled three decades of government instability and repeated droughts. The vast majority came to the U.S. legally, and many even voted for Trump during the 2024 presidential election, said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

“This isn’t about illegal immigrants,” said Hussein, who emigrated from Somalia to the U.S. in 1993. “This is about his continuous attack against Black people. He wants to get as many Black people out of here as possible.”

In a statement to Houston Public Media, CAIR’s Washington D.C. office said Abbott was false in claiming that CAIR-New Jersey was a sponsor of the Houston games.

“Children should be off-limits in political games. The organization also said that Abbott’s declaration against CAIR is “lawless.”
