The Republican Party seemed to tone down the anti-Muslim language as it sought the socially conservative community’s votes.
But Corey Saylor, research and advocacy director at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said Islamophobia goes in cycles.
“Islamophobia is sort of baked into American society,” Saylor told Al Jazeera.
“It wasn’t front and centre, but all it required was something to flip the switch right back on, and I would say, we’re seeing that once again.”

CAIR: Reported hate incidents at LCPS dropped 24% in 2024-25 – Loudon Times
Corey Saylor, research and advocacy director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said in an email that he couldn’t comment on the LCPS statistics, but said bullying of Muslim students is increasing nationally. In 2024, CAIR received complaints regarding 295 incidents compared to 233 in 2023 and 118 in 2022. The statistics include complaints involving college students as well as K-12 students.
Saylor said many incidents go unreported.
“Data from the Othering and Belonging Center at UC Berkeley indicates that 87.5% of Muslim victims of hate crimes do not report the incident, frequently because they do not know where to report it,” he said.
