On the other side of the conflict, Samar Ismail, a Palestinian community organizer with the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the largest Muslim civil rights organization in the U.S., offers a different perspective.

Ismail recently visited the West Bank and describes the devastation she saw.

“I did see the constant bulldozing of the refugee camps. I’ve seen the military tanks drive around and threaten people. I’ve seen the Israeli soldiers with their massive weapons walking around,” Ismail said.

Since October 7th, Ismail said, Palestinians have been suffering.

“How are we allowing a nation to commit genocide backed by our tax dollars. It’s unacceptable,” Ismail said.

Council on American-Islamic Relations Los Angeles Executive Director Hussam Ayloush told City News Service in an email the “ideal outcome is simple: the killing must stop, the siege must end, and the Palestinian people must finally be free.”

“We hope for a permanent for a permanent ceasefire that ends Israel’s genocide in Gaza, releases all captives, both Israeli and Palestinian, and begins the path towards a liberated, self-determined Palestinian state — free from Israeli occupation and Western colonial control,” Ayloush said in his email.

Ayloush also called on every person “of conscience,” regardless of ethnicity, faith or nationality, to raise their voices.

“Demand that your elected officials stop funding genocide. Demand a permanent ceasefire and accountability for war crimes,” Ayloush said in his email. “This is not about politics; it’s about humanity. Silence is not neutrality; it is consent. Every voice matters. Every phone call to our elected officials matters. Our collective power can and will make a difference.”

The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) also criticized the move. “These students exercised their rights to demand accountability from their university in the face of an ongoing genocide,” said Attorney Jeffrey Wang. “The District Attorney’s choice to bypass a public preliminary hearing undermines transparency and fairness and signals an intent to punish, rather than to seek justice.”
