CAIR-AZ: Police removed their hijabs during pro-Palestinian protests at ASU. Now, they’re suing – Arizona Republic

Separate attorneys for some of the women previously told The Republic they “begged and pleaded” with police to not remove their hijabs. Several other community leaders denounced the actions at the time, including Azza Abuseif, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Arizona.

“You feel violated, you’re hurt, and it’s dehumanizing,” Abuseif said. “It’s part of their identity to wear the hijab. This is a gross violation of the religious rights of peaceful protesters.”

“Public safety must not come at the cost of civil rights. Instead of investing in technologies that surveil innocent people, we should start supporting what actually builds community safety — housing for the unhoused, youth programs, and resources that address root causes of insecurity,” said Tazheen Nizam, a Vista resident and executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) San Diego office.
