CAIR Md. Condemns Bigoted Smears Against Muslim-Owned Gym in Howard County

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations strongly condemns dishonest and bigoted attacks on a Muslim woman-owned fitness facility based in Scaggsville, Howard County.

In social media posts last week, anti-Muslim extremists attacked a Maryland Muslim business for hosting a men-only gym despite the fact that the business is actually led by a female entrepreneur and has time periods set aside for both women and men to privately train, like many other gyms.

“We thank our clients and all those who have stood with us to debunk and push back against these baseless attacks,” said Sabeel Athletics’ owner, who is a Muslim woman residing in Howard County. “Religious freedom and mutual respect are values that make Howard County strong, and we will continue to proudly practice our faith unapologetically as we strive to help our community members meet their fitness goals.”

In a statement, CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry said:

“The dishonest and hateful attacks smearing Sabeel Athletics are rooted in long-standing anti-Muslim bigotry rather than any legitimate concern. Private business entities offering a faith-conscious fitness environment for people who choose that option are constitutionally protected. We condemn anti-Muslim bigots recklessly endangering Maryland communities by inciting hate with their malicious and dehumanizing rhetoric.

“Although they’re stoking hysteria to distract the American public and demonize American Muslims, these tired and desperate tactics are failing. Muslim-owned businesses do not need to justify their values to extremist voices seeking attention through hate. They are protected by the same rights that safeguard all Americans. Howard County is home to diverse Muslims who contribute every day to strengthening the fabric of our society. Our communities will not be shamed or intimidated.”

CAIR urges Maryland public officials and community leaders to unequivocally reject these misinformation campaigns and the ongoing surge in anti-Muslim hate.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.

Sabeel Athletics is a values-driven wellness company that provides intentional fitness spaces that honor modesty and inclusion for all fitness levels. Its vision is to develop larger projects that support and uplift Muslims in fitness, education, and long-term health.
