Thania Diaz Clevenger is a dynamic public servant, community leader, and civil rights advocate with a strong background in business. Raised by Cuban immigrant entrepreneurs, Thania embodies the values of hard work, persistence, freedom, and equality that have shaped her sense of leadership and professionalism.
With her expertise as an attorney specializing in business law, particularly in corporations, franchises, and trademarks, Thania conducts extensive legal research to stay abreast of changing state registration regulations for franchising. She skillfully drafts trademark applications and franchise disclosure documents while providing comprehensive legal support to meet her client’s needs.
Driven by her passion for justice and equality after earning a degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo University, Thania pursued a law degree from Stetson University College of Law. During this time, she immersed herself in studying the role of the judiciary during the Civil Rights movement. She traveled throughout the American South to engage with Freedom Riders, activists, and civil rights lawyers – gaining invaluable insights into their experiences.
Thania’s commitment to civil rights continued as she joined the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where she investigated employment discrimination claims. In 2011, Thania became the Civil Rights Director for CAIR Florida, the largest Muslim civil liberties organization in the state. There she handled numerous legal intakes related to civil liberties issues while overseeing litigation dockets and implementing proactive community lawyering services.
Transitioning into the role of Chief Operations Director at CAIR Florida showcased Thania’s ability to create professional development education programs focused on diversity and inclusion for organizations. She led outreach efforts targeting law enforcement agencies, school districts, and health facilities – educating them about the Islamic faith while proactively mitigating religious/civil rights violations.
Currently serving as Chief Operating Officer at the national headquarters of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Thania plays an instrumental role in the organization’s strategic planning initiatives while managing its daily operations. She oversees the implementation of CAIR’s strategic plan, including program expansion, chapter development, partnership strengthening, and internal operational enhancements. Thania’s strategic planning also extends to improving fundraising efforts to sustain CAIR’s impactful programs and services.
Beyond her professional achievements, Thania remains grounded and dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Finding joy in spending quality time with her family, Thania also nurtures her love for travel and hiking.
