The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, is calling on American Muslims and everyone concerned about the ongoing Gaza genocide to contact their U.S. senators and express support, or disapproval, based on how they voted during the Senate’s recent failure to adopt a pivotal resolution requiring an assessment of Israeli wartime conduct.
On Tuesday night, the Senate failed to adopt Senator Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) 502B(c) Resolution. The resolution would require the U.S. State Department to research and report on violations of internationally recognized human rights due to indiscriminate or disproportionate military actions, the denial of basic humanitarian needs, and steps taken to mitigate civilian risks. Additionally, the resolution would have also sought a certification regarding Israeli security forces’ compliance with human rights standards, a summary of arms supplied to Israel since October 7, and an assessment of Israel’s adherence to international humanitarian law in Gaza.

The following messages will be sent to your state’s U.S. Senate delegation based on how they voted on the 502B(c) Resolution.
For those U.S. Senators who “Voted No” on scheduling a vote for the resolution: A message expressing disappointment:
“I am writing to express my disappointment in your recent vote on U.S. Senate Resolution 502B(c). The failure of this resolution underscores a concerning lack of commitment to holding Israel accountable for potential violations of human rights and the misuse of U.S.-supplied munitions. This decision raises questions about America’s dedication to oversight and justice in the ongoing conflict, sending a disheartening message to both the American people and the international community. The Netanyahu government has reportedly killed over 24,100 Palestinians and wounded over 60,834, most of them women and children.”
“I urge you to reconsider your stance on this matter and actively support initiatives that prioritize accountability and oversight, ensuring that our allies adhere to international standards even in the midst of conflicts. It is essential to demonstrate a commitment to justice, human rights, and a responsible approach to our role in promoting peace.”
For those U.S. Senators who “Voted Yes” on scheduling a vote for the resolution: A message expressing appreciation:
“I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for your recent support of U.S. Senate Resolution 502B(c). Your vote in favor of this resolution demonstrates a commitment to upholding human rights, promoting justice, and ensuring accountability, particularly in the context of the ongoing situation in Gaza.”
“By supporting Resolution 502B(c), you have taken a stand against potential violations of internationally recognized human rights and the misuse of U.S.-supplied munitions. Your dedication to oversight and accountability is commendable and reflects a commitment to justice that resonates with many concerned citizens.”
“I want to thank you for your principled stance and for prioritizing the values that America holds dear. Your support for initiatives that promote peace, uphold human rights and ensure responsible actions in international conflicts is crucial, and it is appreciated by those who believe in justice and accountability.”
For those U.S. Senators who “Did Not Vote” on scheduling a vote for the resolution: A message requesting to support similar resolutions:
“On January 16, during the U.S. Senate vote for Senator Bernie Sanders’ 502B(c) Resolution, addressing human rights violations in Gaza and holding the Israeli government accountable, you did not vote. As your constituent, I urge you to support similar resolutions if they come up for a vote again. Your active support is crucial in upholding our nation’s commitment to justice, human rights, and accountability. Supporting resolutions that initiate inquiries into alleged war crimes is crucial for America as it aligns with the nation’s foundational principles of justice, human rights, and accountability. By actively endorsing such resolutions, America reinforces its commitment to fairness, upholds the ideals of due process, and fosters international trust. Emphasizing accountability sends a powerful message that the nation stands firm on the principle that no one is above the law, contributing to global efforts to prevent and address human rights violations. Your constituents look to you for leadership on these critical issues, and your endorsement can make a meaningful impact. Thank you for your attention, and I encourage your positive engagement in decisions related to this matter.”
In a statement, CAIR’s Director of Government Affairs Department Robert McCaw said:
“We call on every American who cares about human rights to send a message to their U.S. Senators to call them out on their vote against Senator Sanders’ call for an assessment of any human rights violations the Israeli government has committed with weapons provided by American taxpayer dollars.
“Our government has consistently avoided investigating the apparent war crimes committed by Israeli forces, often using arms supplied by the United States, against innocent Palestinian civilians.”
