The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, is calling on all Americans to thank or rebuke their representatives following today’s vote on H.R. 9495, the “Nonprofit Killer” bill. The bill passed with a simple majority vote, 219:184 CAIR commends members of Congress who voted NO, standing firm to protect constitutional freedoms, religious liberty, and the rights of nonprofits. We strongly rebuke those who voted YES, undermining due process and jeopardizing the vital work of advocacy groups, religious organizations, and civil society.

Despite widespread opposition from civil rights, religious, and advocacy organizations, the House has voted to pass H.R. 9495, advancing this dangerous legislation to the Senate. Over 16,000 CAIR supporters contacted House members urging them to vote NO, yet the bill still passed.

Last month, CAIR joined 100 organizations in a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, stating that H.R. 9495 “poses a direct threat to the constitutional rights of any American nonprofit, house of worship, or advocacy organization.”

Last week, CAIR joined organizations including the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), ICNA Council for Social Justice, Justice For All, Muslim American Society (MAS), and Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) in welcoming the initial defeat of H.R. 9495 when it failed to secure a 2/3 vote.

In May, CAIR also joined 135 civil liberties and human rights groups in a letter to the Senate Finance Committee opposing similar legislation.

In a statement CAIR Government Affairs Department Director Robert McCaw said,

“We stand resolute in the fight against this outrageous assault on free speech, due process, and the rights of nonprofit organizations. This legislation is a direct attack on the very principles that uphold our democracy, and we will stop at nothing to ensure it dies in the Senate. We applaud the courageous members of Congress who voted no, refusing to cave to political pressure and standing boldly for constitutional freedoms and religious liberty. we strongly rebuke those who voted in favor, undermining due process and threatening the vital work of advocacy groups, religious organizations, and any nonprofit that support innocent Palestinians. CAIR will continue to mobilize with Muslim, Arab, Palestinian, and Jewish communities across the nation to ensure this disastrous bill never sees the light of day.”
