(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/8/22) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, is urging all Americans to take part in its click-and-send action alert asking members of the U.S. House of Representatives to co-sponsor and support Congresswoman Betty McCollum’s (D-MN) recently reintroduced “Defending the Human Rights of Palestinian Children and Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act.” The bill is co-sponsored by 16 additional members of congress.
Introduced on Friday, this crucial legislation is designed to protect the rights of Palestinian children and families living under Israeli military occupation, who have long suffered from the brutal and oppressive apartheid policies of the Israeli government.

In a statement, CAIR Director of Government Affairs Department Robert S. McCaw said:
“Representative Betty McCollum’s reintroduction of the Defending the Human Rights of Palestinian Children and Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act is a welcome move, and CAIR stands firmly behind this important legislation.
“This Act is a crucial step in ensuring that our government does not provide financial support for the wrongful detention and prosecution of Palestinian children, the seizure and destruction of Palestinian property, and the annexation of Palestinian land in breach of international law and human rights norms.
“We urge Congress to take swift action to safeguard the fundamental human rights of Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation.”
The legislation aims to prevent the Israeli government from using U.S. taxpayer funds in the Occupied West Bank for various purposes, including the military detention, mistreatment, or abuse of Palestinian children in Israeli military detention. It also seeks to prevent the seizure and destruction of Palestinian homes and property, which is a violation of international humanitarian law. Additionally, the legislation prohibits any support or assistance for the unilateral annexation of Palestinian lands, which is also a violation of international humanitarian law.
The bill is supported by more than 75 civil society organizations and groups, including:
