CAIR-Alabama Welcomes Federal Charges for Threats to Jewish and Muslim Leaders, Calls on Politicians to Stop Promoting Bigotry

The Alabama office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AL), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed federal charges brought against a man who allegedly made multiple threats targeting Jewish and Muslim religious leaders and called on political leaders, especially Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), to stop promoting bigotry against the people of Alabama.

Last month, CAIR-AL welcomed his arrest.

In a statement, CAIR-Alabama Staff Attorney Britton O’Shields said:

“We welcome these federal charges and hope they serve as a clear reminder that threats and acts of hate will not be tolerated. This case underscores how dangerous it is when public officials normalize bigotry and conspiracy theories for political gain. Words have consequences. When political leaders spread misinformation about Muslims, Jews, or any other community, it creates an environment in which hatred and violence can take root.”

She noted that CAIR-AL recently called on political leaders in the state to denounce Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s “increasingly unhinged” conduct, including his embrace Sandy Hook Massacre denier Alex Jones and false claims that “sharia law” is taking over America.

CAIR-AL also called Sen. Tuberville’s bill purporting to ban “Sharia law” an “unconstitutional attack on religious freedom.”

O’Shields said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
