CAIR Applauds Presbyterian Church Divesting from Israeli Government Bonds

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today applauded a vote by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to divest from Israeli government bonds.

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church voted Monday to divest from Israel bonds and start encouraging two companies it believes are contributing to human rights abuses against Palestinians in the occupied territories to stop. It also passed a resolution denouncing Christian Zionism, stating: “Twenty years ago, our denomination denounced as a heresy the theology undergirding Christian Zionism.”

The Presbyterian Church (USA) has some 8,800 churches and 1 million members. It is the largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States.

The resolution states in part“Addressing Israel’s prolonged occupation of Palestinian territory is especially urgent today, as it is directly connected to the devastating war in Gaza and ongoing violence in the West Bank.”

“We applaud this decision by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and encourage all religious and faith-based institutions to similarly reject complicity in the far-right Israeli government’s genocide in Gaza,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

He noted that earlier this year, CAIR welcomed a statement by the African Methodist Episcopal Church calling on the U.S. government to halt all its funding of the far-right Israeli government’s genocide in Gaza.
