CAIR Applauds Virginia School Board’s Vote Not to Restore Confederate School Names

(WASHINGTON D.C., 6/11/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today applauded a vote by Virginia’s Shenandoah County School Board not to change the names of two schools back to their previous, Confederate-inspired names.

That board voted against the restoration of the Confederate-related names of two county schools late Thursday night. The 3-3 vote meant that the motion to restore the names of Ashby-Lee Elementary School and Stonewall Jackson High School failed. In 2020, the board voted to change the names to Honey Run Elementary and Mountain View High School.

Last month, CAIR urged the board not to change the name.

“We applaud the Shenandoah County School Board’s vote to keep the new inclusive names for the schools and to provide a welcoming learning environment for all students,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “No student should be forced to attend a school honoring those who defended slavery, systemic anti-Black racism and white supremacy.”

He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
