CAIR-Austin Invites Community for Groundbreaking of New Pedestrian Signals on North Lamar in Memoriam of Imam Islam Mossaad

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Austin Chapter (CAIR-Austin), today invited community members and faith leaders to join the groundbreaking of two new pedestrian beacon signals on North Lamar Blvd. on Tuesday, February 11, at 10:30 a.m., taking place outside North Austin Muslim Community Center (NAMCC) at North Lamar Boulevard and Little Oak Drive, where one of the signals will be installed.

Imam Islam Mossaad was tragically killed by a vehicle on July 27 last year while walking along North Lamar Boulevard, a corridor that has long lacked adequate pedestrian infrastructure. In the wake of his death, CAIR-Austin renewed calls for immediate safety measures and for the City of Austin to fund and advance the long-delayed North Lamar corridor development project originally promised in a 2016 bond proposition. CAIR-Austin extends its sincere gratitude to CM Siegel (D7), CM Chitto (D4), CM Qadri (D9), community partners, and Austin Transportation and Public Works (ATPW) for pushing these pedestrian signals as well as other improvements along N Lamar Blvd. such as new sidewalks, and new bus stops.

“These pedestrian signals bring a mix of sorrow and hope,” said Shaimaa Zayan, Operations Manager of CAIR Austin. “Imam Islam Mossaad was someone people felt safe around. He served others regardless of their socioeconomic status or background and dedicated his life to building bridges across communities. These beacon signals reflect his legacy of care, protection, and service to all. We hope they provide some consolation to his family and to the community that continues to grieve his loss. We hope this milestone keeps Imam Mossaad’s memory alive as a symbol of dignity and shared responsibility as a faith leader who was actively involved in interfaith work and served as the first Muslim president of iACT (Interfaith Action of Central Texas).”
