CAIR-AZ Calls Federal Probe of ASU a Violation of Students’ First Amendment Rights

The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ) today expressed deep concern that a federal investigation of Arizona State University (ASU) will violate students’ First amendment rights and set a dangerous precedent for silencing political speech on college campuses.

This federal scrutiny follows a broader trend of targeting pro-Palestinian, anti-genocide activism, a move that civil rights advocates say dangerously conflates legitimate criticism of genocidal Israeli policies with antisemitism. Universities should be spaces for free expression, debate, and activism—not arenas where students are punished for advocating for Palestinian human rights.

In a statement, CAIR-AZ Executive Director Azza Abuseif said:

“This is deeply unsettling. ASU should be investigated for its mistreatment of pro-Palestinian, anti-genocide protesters, its unethical policy of forcibly removing hijabs during arrests, and its blatant double standard as a higher education institution. Villainizing students for exercising their right to free speech while ignoring these injustices is unacceptable. We are heading down a dangerous road where silence enables oppression. We must stand against complicity and demand accountability.

“CAIR-AZ calls on ASU and federal authorities to ensure that all students—regardless of their political views—are afforded their constitutional rights to free speech and peaceful protest. Suppressing student voices under the guise of combating discrimination undermines the very principles of democracy and academic freedom.”
