The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ) welcomes the long-awaited swearing-in of Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva, which took place yesterday following an unnecessary and unexplained delay by the Speaker of the House.
While CAIR-AZ said it is pleased that Congresswoman Grijalva can now fully begin the work her community elected her to do, the organization remains concerned about the circumstances that postponed her seating.
For days, Congresswoman Grijalva was prevented from carrying out her official duties, casting votes, and providing full representation to the people of Tucson, despite being fully qualified and prepared to take office. Her swearing-in restores the voice of her constituents in Congress, a development CAIR-AZ celebrates.
In a statement, Azza Abuseif, CAIR-AZ Executive Director said:
“We are happy to see Congresswoman Grijalva finally sworn in and able to represent her community without further obstruction. At the same time, we remain concerned that her seating was delayed without legitimate reason, leaving her constituents without a voice in Congress during a critical period. We hope this incident prompts greater transparency and safeguards to ensure that no community’s representation is ever put on hold again.”
