CAIR-CA Announces Support for Proposition 50 to Protect Community Voice and Near-Term Access to Services

The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today announced its support for Proposition 50 on the Nov. 4 special election ballot.

Proposition 50 would implement a temporary congressional map through 2030, with the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission resuming its work in 2031. CAIR-CA is taking a “Yes on Prop 50” position to protect community voice and near-term access to constituent services for immigrant, refugee, AMEMSA, and allied communities—with a commitment to mitigate drawbacks where new lines create seams.

In a statement, CAIR-CA Legislative and Government Affairs Director Oussama Mokeddem said:

“CAIR-CA supports Proposition 50 because it protects our community’s voice and access to services in the near term, and we’re candid about the tradeoffs. Where the new map splits communities, we will step in with education, navigation tools, and coordinated casework—and we remain committed to the independent commission process resuming in 2031.”

CAIR-CA emphasized that the organization’s analysis is nonpartisan and service-focused: clearer, more coherent districts help residents identify which congressional office to contact for urgent help and strengthen accountability when offices fail to respond. At the same time, CAIR-CA acknowledged that some neighborhoods may see new seams under the temporary map and laid out concrete safeguards:

  • Education & navigation: Region-specific explainers and a district look-up tool to help residents quickly locate their representative and service contacts.
  • Multilingual community sessions: Nonpartisan, language-accessible events focused on how to navigate services under the new lines.
  • Coordinated casework: Direct coordination with congressional district offices in affected corridors to streamline referrals and turnaround for community members.

CAIR-CA is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization and does not support or oppose any party or candidate.

CAIR-CA is a chapter of CAIR, America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
