CAIR-CA to Host 14th Annual Muslim Day at the Capitol, Advocating for MENA Inclusion and the Protection of Ethnic Studies

On Monday, May 12, the California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, will host its 14th Annual Muslim Day at the Capitol (MDAC).

The daylong civic engagement event will run from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and bring together more than 150 participants from across California to meet with state legislators and advocate on two key policy issues.

Legislative Priorities:

  • Support AB 91 – Requires state agencies to include a Middle Eastern or North African (MENA) category in demographic data collection to ensure accurate representation of over 740,000 Californians.
  • Oppose AB 1468 – Imposes vague restrictions on Ethnic Studies that could censor discussions of Palestine and settler colonialism, and limit educators’ ability to teach marginalized histories.

A press conference will be held at 12:30 p.m., featuring:

  • Hussam Ayloush, Chief Executive Officer, CAIR-CA
  • Basha Jamil, Policy Manager, CAIR Greater Los Angeles Area
  • Professor Theresa Montaño, Chicano/a Studies faculty at CSU Northridge and chair of the California Faculty Association Teacher Education Caucus
  • Tazheen Nizam, Executive Director, CAIR San Diego
