CAIR Calls for Hate Crime Probe of Alleged Racist Assault on D.C. Uber Driver

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/24/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on law enforcement authorities in investigate an alleged racist attack on a Washington, D.C., Uber driver as a possible hate crime.

Uber banned a customer following a racist rant against the driver, which was captured on video in Northwest D.C. The video shows a white woman berating the driver, who is Black, using racial slurs. At one point in the video, the woman appears to hit the driver. Police officers responded to the incident but did not file a report.

“We urge law enforcement authorities to take every allegedly bias-motivated incident seriously and to take appropriate legal actions against the alleged perpetrators,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Our society has a collective duty to hold accountable those who turn their bigoted views into racist and violent actions.”

He noted that just yesterday, CAIR welcomed the response of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., to an alleged anti-Muslim and anti-Indian attack on two of its students.

Hooper added that said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
