(WASHINGTON D.C., 6/29/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on law enforcement authorities to investigate alleged racist harassment targeting a Mexican restaurant in Clinton, Wisc., as possible hate crimes.
The restaurant’s owners say they have been the victims of threatening, harassing phone calls telling them to “leave town,” “close the restaurant” and “go back to their country.” Similar messages were reportedly written on dollar bills by some customers. The owners have filed a police report about the threats and the community has offered support.

“These incidents of alleged racist harassment should be thoroughly investigated as possible hate crimes by law enforcement authorities and the perpetrators must be held accountable,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We stand in solidarity with the reported victims of this harassment and all those targeted by racism and bigotry.”
He noted that yesterday, CAIR condemned the distribution of antisemitic flyers in Marshfield, Wisc.

Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and white supremacy.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
