The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the American Medical Association (AMA) to issue a statement demanding the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the Gazan doctor who walked toward Israeli tanks in an iconic video, and who is reportedly in deteriorating condition due to torture and abuse after being kidnapped by Israeli forces.
According to Physicians for Human Rights, Abu Safiya has lost more than 50 pounds, suffers from scabies without receiving proper treatment, and faces a severe decline in his overall health. He remains unaware of the charges against him.
Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly demanded his release.
“Dr. Abu Safiya’s reported torture and abuse are clear violations of international human rights and medical ethics,” said CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell. “We call on the American Medical Association to end its silence and stand up for a fellow physician whose only ‘crime’ was treating patients under siege. The AMA must demand his immediate release and call for accountability for the systemic targeting of Gaza’s medical community.”
In its Gaza genocide, Israel has murdered more than 1,700 healthcare workers and bombed most of the healthcare facilities. Israel murdered five journalists in a recent attack on Nasser Hospital.
Last year, CAIR called on AMA to condemn an Israeli massacre of medical personnel in Gaza, with no response from that group.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
