The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on President Biden to fire “shadow president” administration official Brett McGurk and other “notoriously orientalist and consistently wrong” foreign policy advisers who have undermined President Biden’s public calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon and Gazawhile pursuing their own “deadly and delusional vision” of a Middle East permanently remade to the benefit of the Israeli government.
Since last week, the Israeli government has killed more than 1,000 Lebanese civilians and displaced over a million people.
In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“President Biden’s Middle East foreign policy has been a disaster, partly because he has surrounded himself with notoriously orientalist and consistently wrong advisers like Bush administration veteran Brett McGurk, a wannabe Lawrence of Arabia who is obsessed with entrenching Arab dictatorships and sidelining the Palestinian cause in the Middle East, all for the benefit of the Israeli government, whose war crimes he privately justifies.
“McGurk has acted as a shadow president on foreign policy for nearly four years, enabling President Biden’s worst instincts while pursuing a delusional vision of a Middle East permanently remade in McGurk’s orientalist image.
“McGurk needs to go, along with the other establishment anti-Arab and Islamophobic Middle East advisers whose arrogance and stubbornness have repeatedly brought our nation and the region to disaster.”
Politico reported: “Presidential adviser Amos Hochstein and Brett McGurk, the White House coordinator for the Middle East, told top Israeli officials in recent weeks that the U.S. agreed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s broad strategy to shift Israel’s military focus to the north against Hezbollah in order to convince the group to engage in diplomatic talks to end the conflict…”
HuffPost said: “’Everyone internally is just shocked at the across-the-board weakness’ given U.S. sway over Israel, a career U.S. official working on Middle East policy told HuffPost. The official said Washington is permitting ‘a nihilistic regional murder spree.’”
