CAIR Calls on DNC to Condemn Police Brutality Against Jewish Americans Peacefully Protesting for Ceasefire

Civil rights group also condemns Congressman Brad Sherman for “smearing and blatantly lying” about protesters

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/16/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to condemn the police brutality unleashed againt Jewish protesters who peacefully protested for a ceasefire outside the DNC headquarters last night.

A coalition of Jewish and allied protesters gathered outside the DNC headquarters in Washington, D.C. last night to demand Democratic lawmakers call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Groups of protesters blocked the entrance of the building in an act of peaceful civil disobedience, held a vigil and sang. Video footage clearly shows Capitol police eventually attacking the protesters, hurling some down a stone walkway, resulting in 90 injuries.

In a statement, CAIR Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“We call on DNC Chair Jaime Harrison to condemn the police brutality unleashed against peaceful Jewish protesters who gathered to urge Democratic politicians to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. For the DNC and Rep. Brad Sherman to attempt to not only deny this violence but to also smear the victims is unconscionable. The DNC must condemn this brutality and stop gaslighting the public.”

Mitchell also condemned Rep. Brad Sherman’s tweet about the protest, in which he called the protesters “pro-terrorist” and falsely claimed they pepper-sprayed police.
