CAIR Calls on NAHL to Act After Racist Incident Targeting Hockey Player in South Dakota

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the North American Hockey League (NAHL) to take action after reported racist behavior by fans targeted a player at a hockey game in South Dakota.

Those fans allegedly made “inappropriate and racial remarks” directed at Sangyeob Kim, a player with the North Iowa Bulls. The incident took place Saturday during a game between the NAHL Watertown Shamrocks and the North Iowa Bulls.

“We condemn the reported racist behavior targeting Sangyeob Kim and urge North American Hockey League officials to take appropriate actions to ensure that this type of allegedly bias-motivated incident is not repeated,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “

He noted that earlier this year, CAIR called on law enforcement authorities to investigate reported neo-Nazi white supremacist vandalism targeting a Black-owned business in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as a hate crime.

CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
