The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on social media companies to take action against Indian Hindutva groups using AI and bot accounts to promote anti-Muslim bigotry and incite violence against Muslims.
A report conducted by the Center for the Study of Organized Hate found 1,326 AI-generated images and videos promoting anti-Muslim hate and violence circulating in India. This content—often sexualising Muslim women, dehumanizing Muslims and glorifying violence – have collectively drawn over 27 million engagements across social media platforms.
In a statement, CAIR Deputy Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“Social media companies must take concrete action to crack down on anti-Muslim bot accounts in India using AI to promote real-world violence against Indian Muslims. Fake campaigns like this can and have led to real violence against various communities.”
