Chicago’s City Council unanimously adopted “Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day” in 2023. In 2024, the United Nations formally recognized July 11 as the “International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica”. This year marks 30 years since the genocide in which over 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered in Srebrenica, Bosnia. According to the Illinois Muslims Report, Bosnians are among the largest ethnic Muslim communities in Chicago, and nearly every Bosnian family in the city has been directly impacted by the genocide.

This event also serves as a call to all communities affected by genocide and ethnic cleansing—from GazaSudan, and the Rohingya, to IndigenousJewish, and Armenian communities. We urge all survivors, allies, and advocates to join in solidarity and reaffirm that “Never Again” means Never Again for All—No Exceptions.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
