At around 11 p.m. on August 12, 2021, a vandal removed a sign from the Alliance YWCA building that denounced hate messages. The security camera footage shows a male wearing a baseball cap, light colored clothing and a swastika tattoo on the side of his arm taking down the sign and cutting it with a knife as he walked away.
In a statement, CAIR-Ohio, Cleveland Chapter Executive Director Julia Shearson said:
“We call on local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to thoroughly investigate this incident as a possible hate crime and to identify and apprehend the alleged perpetrator.
“CAIR-Cleveland has worked in partnership with our local YWCA organizations. We respect and uphold the same values of diversity, inclusion and promoting peace as the YWCA. We stand in solidarity with our friends at the YWCA and the communities they serve.”
She said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
