CAIR-Colorado Welcomes Sentencing in Hate Crime Arson Targeting Church

The Colorado chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CO), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the sentencing of a man convicted of burning a church in Loveland, Colorado.

A Colorado man has been sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted on a federal hate crime charge for setting fire to a church in Loveland in January of last year. The man said he was motivated to start the fire because of the “religious character of the church.”

“We welcome the sentencing in this case and stand in solidarity with the congregation impacted by this hateful crime,” said CAIR-CO Board Chair Krista Cole. “No faith community should have its house of worship targeted by bigotry.”

Cole urged religious institutions of all faiths to make use of CAIR’s Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety guide and implement security measures.

CAIR’s Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety guide can be accessed here.

She said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
