The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today commended President Trump and Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani on their respectful meeting in the White House. CAIR also commended Mayor-Elect Mamdani for acknowledging and speaking out against U.S. support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza during the Oval Office meeting.
In a statement, CAIR said:
“We commend President Trump and Mayor Elect-Mamdani for the respectful meeting they hosted at the White House today. We especially commend Mayor-Elect Mamdani for having the courage to recognize and speak out against U.S. support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza while standing beside President Trump in the Oval Office. We also appreciate President Trump’s agreement with Mayor-Elect Mamdani that the American people do not want our nation to spend our taxpayer dollars on more forever wars. We encourage President Trump to build on today’s positive moment with the first Muslim elected mayor of New York City by rejecting the extremist voices who seek to divide Americans, spread hate and entangle our nation in conflict overseas.”
In their first face-to-face meeting, President Trump and New York Mayor-Elect Mamdani described their first in-person conversation as cordial and productive.
Trump praised Mamdani’s campaign and pledged to work with him on shared policy concerns surrounding the cost of living and crime reduction. “I met with a man who’s a very rational person. I met with a man who wants to see – really wants to see – New York be great again,” the President said, referring to Mamdani. “I’ll be cheering for him.”
“I enjoyed our conversation and I look forward to working together to deliver that affordability for New Yorkers,” Mayor-Elect Mamdani said.
