CAIR Condemns Anti-Asian Attack in Wisconsin, Welcomes Dropping of N.C. Institutional Names Associated with Racism  

(WASHINGTON D.C., 10/1/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned an apparent anti-Asian hate attack in Wisconsin and welcomed the changing of a number of institutional names in North Carolina that are associated with racism and slavery. 

In Wisconsin, a man was charged after allegedly crossing the street to confront am Asian-American University of Wisconsin student and spitting in her face last month. The woman said she felt targeted by the man because of her race and appearance.

In North Carolina, four state prisons and a drug addiction treatment facility are being renamed because the connection of their current names to racism or slavery.

“Every effort must be made nationwide to challenge all forms of bigotry and to eliminate the tragic legacy of systemic racism in our nation,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. 

He said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
