(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/14/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned an alleged bias-motivated attack on a student in Indiana.
That 18-year-old student at Indiana University was reportedly stabbed multiple times and beaten on the head on a Bloomington, Ind., bus on Wednesday. A suspect was arrested and reportedly admitted to targeting the student because of her race.
According to court records, the suspect said she stabbed the woman because it “would be one less person to blow up our country.”

“We condemn this apparently bias-motivated attack and urge local, state and national elected officials to do more to address the growing bigotry and violence targeting the Asian-American community,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Indiana’s hate crime legislation should be applied in this case.”
He noted that Indiana’s hate crime law creates an aggravating circumstance if bias is a motivating factor.

Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
