The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed solidarity with Muslims in the UK after an alleged hate crime assault on a Muslim girl in Newton Mearns, Scotland, and the vandalism of a mosque in Stockport, England.
According to reports, a young Muslim girl was walking home from Eastwood High School in Newton Mearns on Monday afternoon when she was confronted by a man who assaulted her and made anti-Muslim comments. The assault is being investigated as a hate crime.

Video from the early hours of September 4 shows two people with hoods and face coverings throwing bricks at the Elaf Mosque on Stockport Road. Police are investigating the attack.
“Islamophobia is rising across Europe and is being enabled by prominent political figures promoting anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant views,” said CAIR National Communications Manager Ismail Allison. “European leaders must take direct action to oppose the rising tide of anti-Muslim bigotry.”
Yesterday, CAIR called on the government of France to address rising Islamophobia after pig heads were left outside at least nine mosques in and around Paris.
