CAIR Condemns Israeli Murder of Unarmed Palestinian Civilian in Group with Hands Up, Holding White Flag

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the latest of what it calls the “Israeli war crime of the day,” the murder of a Gaza civilian in a group holding a white flag and holding their hands up in a so-called Israeli “safe zone.”

That murder of Ramzi Abu Sahloul, who was among a group of men standing still with their hands up and with one of them holding a white flag, was filmed by a cameraman with Britain’s ITV News.

Abu Sahloul earlier told ITV News that he was trying to reach his mother and brother to get them out of harm’s way. After the interview, the cameraman turned to get one last image of the group there was a volley of shots and Abu Sahloul collapsed on the ground. The white flag was placed over his wounds.

Israel has now killed more than 25,000 Gazans, mostly women and children.

CAIR recently condemned other “Israeli war crimes of the day” in Gaza, including eyewitness reports of the execution of civilians by Israeli forces, looting of archeological artifacts, reports of the “torture” of detainees and the ongoing desecration of cemeteries.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“The daily barbarity of the far-right Israeli government’s genocide in Gaza seems to know no bounds. Even the Biden administration, which blindly supports that genocide, today meekly called on Israeli forces to protect innocent civilians as that military stormed one hospital and besieged another.

“This total disregard of the targeted killing of a civilian in a group holding a white flag is encouraged and made possible by President Biden’s callous support for the Israeli government.

“The Biden administration, through its actions and inaction, is making our nation complicit in genocide, ethnic cleansing and forced starvation. There must be an immediate and permanent ceasefire leading to freedom and dignity for the Palestinian people.”

He noted that Israel’s far-right government has systematically destroyed religious (1,000 mosques destroyed), historical, educational, institutional, and cultural sites in Gaza.

Awad added that CAIR condemned the killing of a Palestinian-American teen by the forces of the far-right Israeli government in the occupied West Bank.

CAIR previously called on the Biden administration to condemn the far-right Israeli government’s targeted murder of journalists in Gaza.

An investigation by the Committee to Protect Journalists reports at least 83 journalists and media workers were among the almost 25,000 people killed by Israel in Gaza since the war began.

CAIR also called on President Biden to condemn Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and take action after he admitted to being opposed to the existence of a Palestinian state in any scenario.

CAIR condemned what it called the latest “Israeli war crimes of the day,” including a new call for ethnic cleansing of Gaza by a top Israeli government official, the demolition of a Gaza university, attacks near a Gaza hospital, video of Israeli troops mocking Palestinian suffering, and Israeli actions forcing women to give birth in the streets.
