(BALTIMORE, MD, 5/20/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the raising of a Confederate flag at a Maryland high school.
On Thursday morning, JROTC at La Plata High School in Maryland’s Charles County discovered a Confederate flag raised on the school’s flagpole. Police believe the flag was hung late Wednesday night. Charles County Public Schools sent a letter to students, parents and staff to address the issue, noting that it was particularly disturbing following the mass shooting committed by a white supremacist in Buffalo.

“We condemn this attempt to intimidate students of color at La Plata High School and we stand in solidarity with the community against white supremacy and all other forms of bigotry,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry.
She noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
