CAIR Condemns Targeting of Asian Restaurants in Maryland at the Start of the Lunar New Year

According to the Howard County Police Department, at least six businesses in Ellicott City and Columbia were burglarized in a period of 24 hours. Most are owned and operated by members of the Asian American community.

In a statement yesterday, Howard County Executive Dr. Calvin Ball said: “Our community is saddened by a string of burglaries that occurred in the last 24 hours. Our restaurant community is going through one of the toughest years that has ever existed for their industry and these crimes are adding unnecessary economic and mental stress.”

In a statement, Director of CAIR’s office in Maryland Zainab Chaudry said:

“We condemn these crimes — especially during a time when many members of the Asian-American community are celebrating the start of the Lunar New Year — and urge anyone with information to notify the police. Studies are consistently showing a rise in hate crimes and violence against Asian-American communities during the pandemic, and it will take all of us to speak out and put an end to the xenophobia and bigotry that are fueling this disturbing trend.”

CAIR has consistently condemned and called for investigations into crimes targeting Asian Americans over the last year.
