CAIR-CT Calls for Hate Crime Probe into Racist Harassment Targeting Female Muslim UConn Students

(HARTFORD, CT, 2/24/2022) – The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT) today called on law enforcement authorities to launch a hate crime investigation into alleged racist harassment targeting two female Muslim University of Connecticut students.

The two students, both of whom wear Islamic headscarves, said they were walking to their dorm Monday night when a man screamed racial slurs at them, including the n-word. The university said campus police have launched an investigation and are looking for the perpetrator.

In a statement, CAIR-CT Chair Farhan Memon said:

“This disturbing incident of alleged racist harassment must be taken seriously by authorities. Students of all faiths deserve to feel safe and welcome on campus. We urge police to launch a hate crime investigation and urge university officials to take action to ensure such incidents do not continue to occur on campus.”

Memon noted that yesterday, CAIR’s San Francisco Bay Area chapter welcomed community support for a Muslim crossing guard wearing an Islamic head scarf, or hijab, who was targeted by protesters using Islamophobic slurs.
