CAIR-Houston to Join the Islamic Society of Greater Houston and IslamInSpanish for the Commemoration of New Wudu Room and Prayer Facilities at IAH Airport

The Council on American-Islamic Relations-Houston (CAIR-Houston) is proud to recognize the leadership team at Houston Airports for their forward-thinking initiative in constructing a wudu (ablution) room and prayer facilities at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). As one of the first airports in the U.S. to offer such amenities, Bush Airport is setting a new standard for inclusivity and traveler comfort.

A special recognition ceremony, scheduled for tomorrow, October 29, will take place at the Houston Airports administration building. The event will bring together CAIR-Houston, the Islamic Society of Greater Houston (ISGH), and IslamInSpanish to celebrate this important milestone.

These new facilities, located within IAH’s Terminal D, are designed to accommodate travelers’ spiritual needs by providing a clean, accessible, and peaceful space for daily prayer and ablution. The new space includes benches, coat racks, and space for luggage and is fully ADA-accessible. This addition signifies a growing acknowledgment of Houston’s diversity and commitment to inclusivity.

Reader’s Note: Wudu is an Islamic ritual of purification that involves washing hands, faces, arms, and feet before prayer.

CAIR-Houston Director William White expressed his excitement for the launch:

“At CAIR-Houston, we are honored to see Houston’s major international airport provide facilities that serve our diverse Muslim community and make it easier for all to practice their faith while traveling. This project represents the community’s dedication to inclusivity and respect for the needs of Muslims in Houston and beyond.”

CAIR-Houston looks forward to continuing its work alongside ISGH, IslamInSpanish, and other community organizations to advocate for initiatives that enrich Houston’s cultural fabric and ensure that all individuals feel welcomed and respected.
