Last year, CAIR, a civil rights group promoting American-Islamic relations, tallied 235 Muslim elected officials, including nearly 50 in New Jersey, home to the largest Muslim population per capita in the country. This year, the group expects the total number to surpass 250, a record.

Still, Sessler’s comments were not received well. In a written statement, the Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations noted that Muslims, like other Americans, have the right to run for office, including Congress.
“American Muslim candidates, like all others, are committed to upholding the U.S. Constitution and serving the best interests of their communities,” CAIR Washington executive director Imraan Siddiqi said in a press release. “Attempts to discredit them based on their faith are not only baseless but an affront to the core values of religious freedom and democracy that define this nation. Such rhetoric is a dangerous attack on the principles that unite our pluralistic society and has no place in public discourse.”

“Biden would not have won Michigan without Muslim votes. For sure. He would have not won without the Muslim community being galvanized, organized and overwhelmingly voting for him,” said Dawud Walid, an executive director with Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Rahman said that other religious groups have come to Open Mosque Day to support, and vice versa — including leaders from Christian and Catholic churches in Whittier, La Mirada’s Temple Beth Ohr, Biola University, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
