CAIR-NC: Train stabbing spurs outcry over Black-on-white violence, but data shows such occurrences are rare – Associated Press

The North Carolina chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights group that primarily advocates against anti-Muslim sentiments, said: “We also condemn those using this crime to resurrect racist talking points about the Black community.”

“This selective outrage is dangerous, hypocritical, and racially motivated, especially given that white supremacists fall silent about other stabbings, mass shootings, hate crimes, financial crimes, rapes and various other misconduct committed by people of all races and backgrounds,” the group said in a statement.

Civil rights groups warn the rhetoric can have consequences. The Council on American-Islamic Relations’s Houston office has seen an uptick in complaints about discrimination, now getting two or three a day, said Imran Ghani, the group’s director.

“The governor’s targeting affects Muslims’s safety, our sense of inclusion and our sense of citizenship,” Ghani said. “Despite being part of the fabric of Houston culture – as business owners, as physicians, as lawyers, as contributing citizens – this kind of rhetoric affects our sense of belonging in Houston, and more broadly, in American culture.”

We remain committed to supporting people of all faiths facing hate, harassment, or intimidation.”
