CAIR-Kansas Welcomes Guilty Plea for Death Threats Targeting Black Children

The Kansas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Kansas), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a guilty plea for death threats targeting Black children.

Austin Schoemann, 30, pleaded guilty Wednesday to using a gun and racist language to threaten two black children in July 2022. Schoemann reportedly used a gun to threaten a Black woman who tried to intervene. He could face from five to seven years in prison. He will be sentenced in October.

“We welcome this guilty plea and hope that it will deter those who hold bigoted views from turning that bigotry into violent actions,” said CAIR-Kansas Board Chair Moussa Elbayoumy. “No child should face threats or harassment based on their race or ethnicity.”

He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
