(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/12/23) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) joined Muslim community members yesterday evening to break their Ramadan fast at Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Annual Ramadan Iftar Dinner hosted by the National Center for Juvenile Justice Reform.
In addition to the National Center for Juvenile Justice Reform, the event was co-sponsored by CAIR, Busboys and Poets, Banneker Ventures, H Street Main Street, J&J Monitoring, and Together We Serve.
Held at the John A. Wilson Building, which houses the Executive Office of the Mayor and the Council of the District of Columbia, attending city officials from the Mayor Bowser’s office included Reverend Thomas L. Bowen, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Religious Affairs and the Director of the Mayor’s Office on African American Affairs, and Linda Harllee Harper, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement.
Representing CAIR were CAIR National Board Member Imam Johari Abdul-Malik and CAIR Director of Government Affairs Department Robert S. McCaw.
The Ramadan Iftar Dinner is an important occasion in which Mayor Bowser’s office shares a meal with members of the Muslim community during the holy month of Ramadan.
“We thank Mayor Bowser’s office, the National Center for Juvenile Justice Reform and other event cosponsors for hosting this special Ramadan celebration. Last night’s iftar raised social awareness about the struggles and accomplishments of Black Muslim youth in Washington, D.C., and across the nation and promoted dialogue and understanding between communities of all backgrounds,” said CAIR Director of Government Affairs Department Robert S. McCaw.
The event provided an opportunity for attendees to break their fast together, share stories and experiences and build new relationships.
