(BOSTON, MA, 8/8/2023) – The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA) today condemned a racist, misogynistic effigy left beneath a campaign sign of a Black candidate.
A “plastic head with the skull burned black, the nose and mouth cut off, and what looks like rags stuffed in the mouth” was reportedly left beneath the sign for Everett City Council candidate Guerline Alcy. A vulgar term for a woman was scrawled on the effigy’s face.

“We condemn the apparent racist and misogynistic intent behind this hateful effigy and urge community leaders to similarity repudiate its bigoted message,” said CAIR-MA Executive Director Tahira Amatul-Wadud. “Those who participate in our political process should not be targeted by hatred and intimidation.”
She said CAIR-MA and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
