Patch reports: “While it is not specifically stated in the motion, the Values-Aligned Local Investments Ordinance was primarily inspired by the ongoing events in Gaza between Israel and Palestine.”

In a statement, CAIR-MA Executive Director Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, Esq., said:

“We applaud the leadership and moral courage of the Medford City Council in choosing to divest from companies profiting from crimes against humanist such as those being carried out in Israel’s ongoing Gaza genocide. This ordinance reflects a growing national awareness that taxpayer dollars must not fund human rights abuses or international war crimes.

“At a time when far too many remain silent in the face of Israel’s mass atrocities, Medford has taken a historic step forward in upholding the values of justice, accountability, and human dignity. We encourage other cities across our state and the nation to follow suit and examine the ethical implications of their investments.”
